Surrey, B.C. – During the Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Surrey City Council will vote on a $740,000 contract for the manufacturing and delivery of eight mobile towable bleachers to improve seating for outdoor events throughout the city. If approved, the mobile bleachers will allow the city to better accommodate the thousands of spectators who attend outdoor events throughout the year, including sports tournaments and concerts.
"Investing in mobile towable bleachers isn't just about adding more seats; it's about elevating the entire experience for our residents and visitors at outdoor events," proclaimed Mayor Brenda Locke. “Our vision is a vibrant events ecosystem that unites athletes, artists, spectators, and neighbors, making our city the premier destination for sports, performances, and community celebrations. We're not just building facilities – we're creating spaces that bring people together and foster a sense of connection and pride."
The proposed mobile towable bleachers provide temporary seating solutions for hundreds of city events annually. Each unit accommodates approximately 156 individuals, is rated for highway transport, and can be assembled in under 30 minutes.
"By providing more seating options, we are not only investing in our city’s infrastructure but also in our community's engagement with sports and cultural events,” emphasized Councillor Gordon Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee. “These bleachers will create a welcoming atmosphere that encourages participation, as well as signifying our Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public amenities and supporting community events.”
Funding for this project is available in the approved 2024 Parks, Recreation & Culture Capital Budget.
